The new Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, criticized the Conservatives for doing “nothing” to address illegal immigration during their 14 years in power, during her first speech in the Commons. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp accused her of merely “tinkering around the edges” regarding potential changes to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). Mahmood informed MPs that the Government plans to introduce new legislation aimed at restricting the provisions of Article 8 of the ECHR, which protects the right to family life. Critics argue that this article has been exploited by illegal migrants to remain in the UK.
