Two people are dead and at least a dozen are missing after flash flooding ripped through parts of Grand Canyon National Park over the weekend, leading to a widespread search and rescue mission as well as evacuations, including at numerous riverside campgrounds, the National Park Service (NPS) said Sunday.
Weather forecasters warned that rain and thunderstorms could bring more flooding to the popular tourist attraction in northwestern Arizona, where the deluge destroyed the canyon’s only water pipeline, leading to emergency water restrictions for year-round residents.
The incident complicates ongoing efforts to modernize the water pipeline that serves six million visitors annually and about 1,600 Grand Canyon Village residents.
The floods caused significant infrastructure damage elsewhere, the NPS said in an update Sunday, destroying footbridges that provided hiker access to the bottom of the inner canyon on the north side of the Colorado River.
