Serena Williams is an American former world No. 1 tennis player widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in tennis history. Born on September 26, 1981, in Saginaw, Michigan, she was raised in Compton, California, alongside her sister Venus Williams. Trained from childhood by their parents, Serena turned professional in 1995 and went on to win 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the Open Era. Beyond tennis, she became a mother, married entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, built Serena Ventures, and developed interests in fashion, business, and investing. Her life has also included serious health challenges, including complications following the birth of her daughter Olympia and her diagnosis with Sjögren’s syndrome.
