Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered a fiery speech on September 13, condemning the Italian left-wing opposition for downplaying the assassination of U.S. conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a vocal supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot dead while speaking onstage at an outdoor event in Utah Valley. Meloni labeled the act a “cold-blooded murder” and criticized the silence or justification coming from parts of the political and intellectual left.
She singled out comments made by Italian intellectual Piergiorgio Odifreddi, who appeared to minimize the killing, and called for accountability for the rise in political hatred. Meloni warned that the climate of violence and demonization of opposing views is becoming dangerous in Italy too.
