Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever issued a strong warning to EU leaders over plans to confiscate Russia’s immobilized sovereign assets to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction, saying such a move lacks legal basis and could backfire on Europe. Speaking at the EU summit in Brussels, De Wever said even during World War II “immobilized assets were never touched,” and insisted on three conditions — a clear legal framework, shared financial risk, and coordinated action across all EU and G7 countries. He cautioned that if these demands were not met, Belgium would move to block the decision, warning that “Putin will take our money back.”
