French President Emmanuel Macron has sparked a diplomatic dispute with Israel after saying at the United Nations that Hamas had never been active in the West Bank. Israeli officials condemned the remark, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office calling it “grotesque” and pointing to alleged Hamas attacks against Israelis in the territory. France later clarified that Macron intended to say Hamas does not govern the West Bank, rather than claiming the group has never operated there. The controversy comes as France and Israel remain deeply divided over Gaza, Palestinian statehood and Israel’s conduct in the occupied territories.
