After days of fighting, Syria’s interim leader is vowing to protect religious minorities in his country, while accusing Israel of sowing division in the region. Syria’s Islamist authorities, who toppled longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December, have had strained relations with the country’s religious and ethnic minorities, and have been accused of not doing enough to protect them. Fighting between local groups – and the government’s ability to control its military and deal with Israel’s interventions into its territory – may prove pivotal to the success of post-Assad Syria.
