Thousands of people marched through Berlin on Friday to protest Germany’s proposed military service law, which aims to expand the Bundeswehr and strengthen NATO defence readiness amid heightened tensions with Russia. Demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags and banners reading “No to conscription” and “We won’t fight in your wars” moved through the capital under police supervision. The draft legislation, known as the Military Service Modernisation Act, would require all 18-year-old men to register for potential service, with a lottery-based call-up system activated if volunteer numbers fall short. Germany, which suspended compulsory service in 2011, plans to raise active personnel to 260,000 and expand reserve forces to 200,000 by 2035.
