German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya in Tokyo, calling for increased pressure on Russia and more aid for Ukraine as global leaders prepare to meet in Washington for key talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Wadephul emphasized that “the whole world is looking to Washington” as US President Donald Trump prepares to host discussions following his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
The German FM praised Japan’s $12 billion in support for Ukraine and condemned China’s backing of Russia, warning that the Indo-Pacific security situation, particularly around Taiwan and the South China Sea, remains a shared concern for Berlin and Tokyo.
