Paris: Protest & Clashes Over Macron’s Austerity Measures; Unions In France On Strike
Massive protests broke out across France over President Emmanuel Macron’s planned austerity measures on Thursday. Trade unions called for a national day of protests against the budget cuts announced by the government. Protesters damaged shops and buildings in the capital, Paris, and clashes broke out with the police after officers used tear gas and shields to disperse the crowds. The protests also led to school closures and major traffic disruptions. Protesters demanded the resignation of President Emmanuel Macron, and his effigy was burned in the city of Nice. Organisers claimed that over one million people took part in the protests, while French authorities later reported around 500,000 protesters and said that 80,000 police officers were deployed to control the crowds. Over 300 people were detained, and 26 police officers sustained injuries. The protesters also called for action on wages, pensions, and improvements to public services.
