The legendary GTi badge has gone electric, and Nicola Hume gets behind the wheel of the new Peugeot e-208 GTi to find out whether this little EV has the attitude and driving fun to live up to the name.
With 281hp and 345Nm, the e-208 GTi can sprint from 0–62mph in just 5.5 seconds, while Peugeot Sport has given it a serious mechanical makeover. It’s 25mm lower, wider at both ends, gets a mechanical limited-slip differential, bespoke suspension, bigger brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres.
And then there’s the important bit: how does it actually drive?
Nicola puts the GTi through its paces to see whether Peugeot has managed to make an electric hot hatch that feels genuinely playful rather than simply very fast.
There’s also a look at the GTi’s styling and interior, including its red detailing, Alcantara steering wheel, sports seats and GTi-specific displays.
But what about the less exciting numbers? The e-208 GTi uses a 51kWh usable battery, has up to 233 miles of WLTP range depending on the tyres, and can charge at up to 100kW DC, taking around 30 minutes to go from 20–80%.
At £34,995 including the £1,500 Electric Car Grant, it isn’t cheap – and there’s already another electric GTi on the horizon in the shape of the Volkswagen ID. Polo GTI.
So, is the Peugeot e-208 GTi the electric hot hatch we’ve been waiting for?
