Swiss prosecutors say the devastating New Year’s Eve fire at a ski resort bar in Crans-Montana was likely sparked by incandescent candles attached to champagne bottles that were carried too close to the ceiling.
At a press conference in Sion, Chief Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud said initial findings suggest the flames spread rapidly and uncontrollably, leading to one of Switzerland’s deadliest fires in recent years.
Officials confirmed 40 people were killed and 119 injured, with dozens of critically burned victims transferred to specialist burn centers across Europe. Authorities say investigations are ongoing as victim identification continues.
