U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday he thought a deal to end the war in Gaza was close.
“I have to meet with Israel,” Trump said at the White House. “I think we can get that one done. I hope we can get it done. A lot of people are dying, but we want the hostages back.”
Israel has been infuriated by Sir Keir Starmer’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state, along with France and other nations. Binyamin Netanyahu’s government said the move rewards Hamas for its terrorist attack on October 7, 2023. It has also been dismissed as a “performative gesture” by the US, which remains Israel’s closest supporter.
