HMS Tamar visits remote Pitcairn Island

HMS Tamar

In January 2024, HMS Tamar spent 5 days in the British Overseas Territory of Pitcairn Island helping the 40 inhabitants with community projects. They also safely disposed of explosives left over from the construction of the island’s small harbour in the 1970s.

The ship conducted sovereignty patrols in the island’s waters – the fourth largest Marine Protected Area in the world, covering an area the size of Scandinavia. Pitcairn lies 1,350 miles from Tahiti more than 3,000 miles from New Zealand and 9,000 miles from Tamar’s home base of Portsmouth.
