The dynamic between both nations today, though, is nowhere close to where it was say, in the late 90s and early 2000s. That is still described as a “honeymoon period” in terms of bilateral relations between both countries. Now, both Tokyo and Seoul are making an effort to retrace their steps back to that era. That’s because the threats to a rules-based order in the Indo Pacific are rising. But why do Japan and South Korea share acrimonious ties? Who’s the challenger they want to confront together?
